The goals of Special Olympics Bharat are to provide year-round sports training and athletic competitions in different Olympic-type sports for intellectually challenged children as well as adults. It provides them with continuous opportunities to be fit, be brave, be happy, and be able to give their talents, abilities, and friends to their families, other Special Olympics Bharat participants, and society at large.

Marking the Milestone of Five Decades of Upliftment

The mandate of Special Olympics Bharat equally remains relevant today as it was during the establishment of the movement in 1968. Special Olympics Bharat envisions a world where people especially those with intellectual deficiency are accepted and included rather than rejected.

Thanks to the influence of sports, people with mental disabilities are able to unearth their inner strengths and capabilities, acquire new skills, and become successful. Most of the athletes have self-belief to partake in active competition in whatever sport it is or even within the context of life itself. They influence individuals who engage in such sports and even up to the communities and society at large to appreciate a wider perspective of human talents and abilities.

According to estimates, almost 200 million people in the world have some form of intellectual disability. We intend to reach out to each one of them—and their families, as well. This is what Special Olympics Bharat aims to achieve through various training programs, competitions, health screening activities, fundraising, and awareness campaigns. We also bring together the family members, community, leaders, businesses, law enforcement, and the champions of politicians in changing perceptions and supporting our athletes.

The Ability to Make a Difference in People’s Lives

The essence of Special Olympics Bharat is the belief of using sports as a tool to build confidence, enhance health and create healthy competition. We concern ourselves with actual sports, genuine contests and attainable goals – be it in the comprehensive coaching manuals that are available in several languages, or in the foreign attired referees during our global competitive events.

With the Special Olympics Bharat, the power and joy of sport is concerned not with what our athletes cannot do, but rather with what they can. The attention to one's disabilities blurs. We focus on caring for the gifts and skills of our athletes, and give them credit for everything that they can do. And they are doing a lot-from twirling poms to kicking balls to swimming in the sea. Having more than 30 Olympic in structure sports for adults and children with intellectual disabilities, we provide many opportunities to participate and demonstrate the identity of individuals in the society.
