Barriers to healthcare access are numerous for the individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID), which contributes to their health inequalities which for their average life expectancy is also 16 years shorter than the one of able-bodied individuals. In fact despite the elevated health risks, essential healthcare services are routinely withheld from persons with ID regardless of the medical attention required. This exclusion results in unfulfilled health care and mental health care needs for many. Such exclusion leads to the aggravation of treatable illnesses and poor health in general.

Special Olympics Bharat Health Initiative

In this scenario, one of the impacting factors is a deep-rooted stigma directed to individuals with intellectual disabilities. The Golisano Foundation along with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are attempting to erase this narrative thanks to Special Olympics Bharat Health. This entails giving them as equal opportunities for maintaining their health as anyone else. It means, integrating fully into the healthcare system, participating in fitness programs and other health activities. We believe individuals with ID and their caregivers should be provided quality care, necessary support, and proper education, which will enable them to live healthier and more satisfying lives.

What is Inclusive Health?

The term 'inclusive health' used in the context of Special Olympics Bharat means that people with intellectual disabilities (ID) should receive the same standard of healthcare services as those people without ID. At the moment, there are several obstacles which preclude equitable care for ID pursers for example scarcity of healthcare givers who comprehend the special needs of the intellectually disabled and discrimination. This often results in treatment gaps, access limitations, and other poor health outcomes, especially in relation to mental health and fitness services. It is important to narrow such extremes in relation to persons living with mental retardation, but mainly in enhancing their life, which is more of mental health than physical disability.

Our Work

Special Olympics Bharat's health programs are aimed at improving the mental and social-emotional health of individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID). These outcomes are achieved by lessening barriers in access to quality mental health care and wellness support and encouraging positive development. The programs include outreach, education, and targeted mental health programs, as well as practice support, all to increase the number of Special Olympics Bharat athletes and individuals with ID who access mental health services and participate in service and policy settings. In addition, there is a call for action for larger systems changes in order to improve the inclusiveness of mental health systems and service provision as well as all activities in order to ensure sustainability of these effects.

In order to promote health and well-being, not only mental health services need to be provided of a high standard, but also the initiatives aimed at addressing the problem of working with emotional reactions in people with intellectual disabilities (ID) should be supported.
